@scottalanmiller said in Get Alert Whenever There is MS SQL Server Access:

It's a production database so there should be an email when the application connects and absolutely no user should ever, ever, ever be able to log in unless it's an admin doing an emergency backup and/or restore (likely alerts would be off during a restore.)

I cannot imagine a MS SQL Server based client-server application that does not make a billion DB calls all day long. So you will have to exclude that system user from being audited.

@scottalanmiller said in Get Alert Whenever There is MS SQL Server Access:

There's no user ever authorized to just connect.

The application user is always connecting. Repeatedly.

Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner. It was MDTC and Windows Firewall. (Which is frustrating, because the firewall is turned off for the domain!)

Good job at troubleshooting. I'm wondering what led you down this path versus something related to Networking, hard drives or software drivers?

Remembered it from several years ago with another SQL based application. Don't know what made me think of it at 1:30am. But I'm ok with it!

Et me guess it is much faster on Linux than on Windows server

No idea, but it is one less Windows Server license needed.

Also MS SQL Server Express works well for many tasks.

@JaredBusch I don't know if you ever finished up with this client, but for $1236 you can get a decent server that would work well.

Why dont they create one giant hazardous label to fit all the products, and make it generic as possible.

Like this product contains hazardous chemicals.

it is not like someone actual reads that small fine print.

      Another problem solved...

If you were looking for a de facto direct replacement to MS SQL Server and just didn't want to have to "think" much about anything, the obvious choice is PostgreSQL.  It is one of the world's most powerful, mature and respected database platforms.  It is insanely fast, scales insanely big, is supported on the most enterprise style deployments, does relational the same way that MS SQL Server does and so forth.  It is the most direct competitor.  And you have loads of top end support options for it.  So if you want a safe "starting point", start there.  It's hard to go really wrong.  But best to do an evaluation of needs as there are just so many great options

we have a company in my town: second quadrant. the provide professional postgresql support worldwide and they pronunce it "postgres". omitting the final "ql"

That's the official pronunciation and it was originally spelled that way. The PostgreSQL spelling was added when it went open source.
